Agency Description: The Anti-Violence Project - Long Island (AVP-LI) confronts violence committed against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and HIV-Positive people of all ages. The project serves survivors of hate motivated violence (including HIV-motivated violence), domestic violence and sexual assault. By providing free and confidential short-term counseling, court/police advocacy, and healing/support groups AVP-LI works to enable people to regain their sense of control, identify their options, and assert their rights. AVP-LI also provides information and referrals to other community based legal, victim support, and mental health services that best suit individual needs. In addition to serving survivors of violence, AVP-LI is committed to educating the Long Island community about the dynamics of GLBT and HIV-motivated violence. To achieve the goal of a more culturally competent atmosphere AVP-LI facilitates workshops targeting health and human service providers, law enforcement personnel, academic professionals, and other community groups.
